Full Day Wildlife Experience (8hrs)
This day is all about ensuring you have a fantastic experience.
Langholm moor and the surrounding area is home to some of the most iconic and rare species of Wildlife in Scotland. The dramatic landscape is a designated SSSI and a Species Protection Area for the mysterious and rare Hen Harrier.
At certain times of the year you have the chance to witness the magnificent “Sky Dancing” as these beautiful birds prepare to mate.
The South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project has begun its five year project releasing Golden Eagles into the area. This means that the landscape around Langholm is now the first place in Scotland you have the chance to see Golden Eagles in the wild when traveling north from England.
Full Day (Usually 8hrs) Itinerary - (Please inform us of any dietary or medical issues by calling or emailing us at the time of booking)
We can collect you in our 4x4 vehicle from partner accommodation or from accommodation within 15 miles of Langholm. Either that or we can meet at an agreed area and set off from there. We will decide on a start time in agreement with you a few days before the experience. We will visit Langholm Moor, where we will be searching for birds of prey such as Hen Harriers, Short Eared Owls, Merlin, Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon and maybe even a Golden Eagle. Other highlights on the moor may include the beautiful and charismatic Wild Goats, Roe Deer, Brown Hare, Stonechat and much more.
Langholm is fortunate to have three rivers meeting in the town, the Border Esk, Ewes Water and Wauchaup Water all provide a chance to see Kingfisher, Goosander, Grey Heron and possibly even Otters.
There are several woodlands in the area and we may visit a number of these where we have a chance to see Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Sparrow Hawk, Greenfinch, Siskin and many others.
We have a number of sites where there is a good chance of seeing the iconic Red Squirrel. This section of the day may require a drive of around 45mins to get to the best location with a chance to see these incredible, endangered animals.
At Wild Eskdale we want to make sure our experiences are designed to suit everyone. If you would like to discuss your guided tour with us then please do get in touch in advance of your chosen date.
If it sounds like there is a lot to fit in, don’t worry there will still be time for a morning and afternoon tea/coffee break, as well as our packed lunch all included in your Wild Eskdale experience price.
*Single person pricing - When booking as a single person (not exclusive) you will be charged the single person rate of £140 at the time of booking. However if on the day you are sharing the vehicle with other guests you will be refunded £45. That way nobody in the vehicle is paying a different rate for the same experience.
*Under 16yrs – Anyone under the age of 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. The minimum age for an experience is 10yrs. If you have children under 10 years old but would like to book an experience please contact Wild Eskdale directly and we will work with you to deliver a package that works for your family.
Wild Eskdale don’t use a minibus where you have to fight for the attention of the guide or for time to see what’s top of everyone’s list. We use a 4x4 which we definitely need as some of the locations with our exclusive permission to access by vehicle don’t really have what could be called a road anymore. Each experience will have a maximum of four people in our fully insured vehicle. At maximum capacity this will require 3 people to sit in the back seat. If you would prefer to have a more personal experience why not book our exclusive deal?
Feel free to bring your own but Wild Eskdale will also provide binoculars and top of the range Swarovski spotting scopes to make the most of your experience.
Insects: Biting midges might be present. Please make sure to take any precautions you see fit to combat this. Ticks are also present on the moor. We suggest wearing thick socks pulled up with long trousers over the top. Please make sure to check yourself for ticks at the end of the day.
Please let us know of any dietary needs in advance of your experience as this impacts what is included in the packed lunch. We cannot be held responsible for any adverse effect of supplied food or drink that we have not previously received dietary information about.
Unlike private Wildlife tour companies, Wild Eskdale is a Langholm Initiative charity project. This means that the fee you pay for an amazing Wildlife experience goes directly towards community projects, outdoor education and to any nature reserves we visit to aid with their running costs.
